Frank J.  Baran

Francis Joseph "Frank" Baran, 96, passed away Wednesday September 28, 2011 under the care of Hospice Home Care. He was a native of Savannah and a graduate of Sacred Heart School and Benedictine Military School, class of 1934. Frank was a communicant of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church. He worked in continuous service of Central of Georgia Railroad for 28 years and Southern Railway System for 19 years with a military leave of absence to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of operations in New Guinea and the Philippine Islands during W.W. II. He retired from Southern Railway Norfolk Southern Corporation as Marketing and Planning Officer on February 1, 1982 in Washington, D.C.
Frank was an honorary Life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 631 and a member of the Immaculate Conception 4th degree K. of C. He was also a member of the St. Patrick's Day Parade Committee, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, the American Legion Post184, Life Member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4392, the Savannah Volunteer Guards, and the Men's Club of St. Peter the Apostle Church. Frank was a 2008 recipient of the Gartland Award.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents William Edward and Gertrude Reynolds Baran, and his wife of over 55 years, Elizabeth Betty Cooley Baran, and his brothers, D.W. and Daniel A. Baran, and by sisters, Alicia B. Tomlin, and Nel B. Grevemberg.

He is survived by his daughter, Carol B. John Massey, of Troutman, N.C., his son, Frank, Jr. Katie, of Savannah, and son, William E. Connie, also of Savannah, and by grandchildren, Amanda, Michael, and Elizabeth Baran, and by several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 30, 2011 with a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 p.m., at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, October 1, 2011 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.

Burial will be in the Catholic Cemetery.

Remembrances may be made to Benedictine Military School, St. Vincent's Academy, or St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church.
